    Hi
Devs can you advise why MECHs have not been introduced yet? A recent post by the Calypso team indicates that the current MindArk vehicle system would not support bipedal vehicles such as MECHs and coding for such would be a very big undertaking?
Considering MECHs were planned for Cyrene when I launched, what is the current development status?

    Cheers
    Bjorn

No MECHS until the next age, still only in soft launch

Posted this on PCF, but since it relates to Cyrene to (and since I have the impression that posts here actually gets read and considered by developers *thank you*) I'm pasting it here to:

What about seeing them as armours?? And seeing we now have the ability for controlling mobs, that could also be part of the solution combined with "riding".

In all fairness, Nobody has any idea how mechs will even work. general idea of mechs is not possible as most think of mechs as 2 legged walkers. With actual moving leg components, Has anyone even seen a trailer of the mech? Possibility No?! So why come to the conclusion based on Calypso Devlopers when the Cyrene Team has a work around in store for us? Hell might even be because they are currently working with MA to design a code that will be released soon? So stop with the conclusions that its impossible, Everything is possible.

Our policy is to not talk about certain private development issues. That said it seems that this is ok seeing as an official MA member has spoken on it.

Yes indeed Mechs have been put behind some other systems but this was at our request. There are older systems that we feel should come out before ours as we do not feel ours should take preference over classic systems such as taming and other that are now fixed and out.

We proposed our system before our soft launch and after a while it seems that it was not possible with current setup of vehicles. As for possible workaround solutions, we did and still are indeed exploring other options including

Using an armor set up that hides the character, though this limited our functionality.

Using mechs with no legs, and we have these ready to go but we are not allowed to just release new vehicles without a specific purpose in mind into the economy of EU. And since this would have no special feature to them other than look, it would not fly (pun intended).

Making the mechs Hub specific, so that they do not need to follow the rest of EU balance rules, and this seems to be the road we may take seeing as there seems to be a longer wait. Of course this would be for a Hard Launch Release along with other details and Ideas we have for these legless Mech vehicles.

Also, Mechs as Mobs are indeed possible, and we have one already known as the Centurion, and the Fenris. Both are powered by a person inside (you can see for yourself if you are next to Zorra and her Fenris).

The Mob control is very new to us and we found out at same time as you. We had explored this option in the past as as well with another team at MA, but they were not the team that had final say, that said it will be interesting how this can be used and implmented.

This reminds me of a games conference I went to about 2 years ago. One developer was saying how their company marketed a bug as a feature :) was funny guy...

Anyway coming back to this legless Mech, don't call it a legless mech but a brand new type of mech never before seen in the history of mechs. The flying Mech !!! which allows total freedom of movement over a land walking mech = D Could be a good marketing feature :)

    Looks pretty exciting as well...

i like the armor idea tho, could be nice with a single unit armor, easier to buy and sell

could be nice to edit the mech armor in different directions according to use with adding different resources like the b.e. pilot armor

Nice info there Ed and you mentioning taming should make a few people pretty happy, but I'm not holding my breath on that one just yet.

Funny though that you see Kim as MindArk personnel while he is trying very hard to convince us he isn't :)

Depends if it's made as a flying mech e.g. legs retract to wings and become legs again when landing.

When is a mech a mech? it does push the limits of traditional mechs but can still be a mech :nana:

You only need to type "flying mech" in google and consider some possibilities...

The point being to look at technical limitations not as limitations but doorways to new possibilities...

If upcoming taming works the way I hope it will. Players will be able to control their pets, maybe even control it as character (while riding) or something. Then this taming system could incorporate "Mech's" as "pets". It would solve 2 birds in one stone so to speak.

No Problem Razer. Thing is I did not know what Kim was up too exactly. I don't follow the other Planets much with my schedule being very tight as it is. Back when we proposed the system Kim was in fact working with the team we proposed the system too, which explains his insight into the issue. If he is now strictly with Calypso than I see no reason not to believe him and my statement was just lacking information is all on his current position. That said, if he sees it fit to talk about such things, we see no reason not to as well. We try and have as much appropriate information available, yet reserve the right to keep things private when needed under various circumstances.

You hit the nail on the head George and as usual you seem to have a good head for these things. We have indeed looked at "Traditional Mechs" that land but move with flight. An old example would be the arcade game Virtual On by Sega I belive. There are many others of course but its not out of the realm of possibilities for now.

Your probably aware of the following issues too. Although difficult for us to discuss properly because on our player side we don't know the technical details of what is possible and what isn't and the technical limitations. I understand you can't talk about them and I wouldn't ask you to. However, I hope you don't mind me throwing up some ideas perhaps something may trigger and idea or an interesting line of inquiry... (oh I don't really expect an answer either :) )

Problem I foresee is the legs. If they can imitate walking or not or indeed how well of a walk would be possible.

Anyway some "silly" ideas to explore:
    * Can wheels be made to look like legs and indeed behave like legs i.e. using the vehicle template to adapt the wheel completely beyond any recognition
    * Perhaps a number of "wheels" each forming part of a leg
    * Perhaps other parts could form a leg or part of a leg e.g. a gun/sword, so legs would be weapons :)
    * Perhaps the physics of cryengine could be used to tinker the above to simulate natural leg movements i.e. no additional coding involved just making use of some features of cryengine
    * Using a number of vehicles to form a mech. This could make for some interesting teamwork game play. Every part here could be identical. For example using this kind of modular approach:

    * Flying mech with legs as mostly static i.e. no attempt made to simulate walking. Legs could be some sort of weapons. Could have additional weapons attached onto the weapon/legs e.g. main leg a cannon with smaller miniguns attached to cannon. Having a leg as a weapon gives it a reason for it to exist other than just landing/takeoff utensil.
    * Possibility of using combination of avatar/vehicle/pet systems to form a new hybrid mech type?

Ed, thank you very much for you post. I like many others have learned a lot here and was great to read something about the inter-workings going on with you and MA. I'm sad this forum doesn't support this, but anyway +REPx1,000,000

Found some interesting research on slime mold:
    http://www.wired.com/2010/01/slime-mold-grows-network-just-like-tokyo-rail-system/

Apparently this simple single cell organism can form some very complex and efficient patterns using some very simple logic.

It's important because it adds more weight to this idea of using simple modular block robots that follow some simple rules to form more complex robots.
