Dear Cyrene Staff,

The text on your client-loader is poorly written and difficult to understand.

It's obvious the person writing this material is not a native English speaker, and has a poor to moderate understanding of the written language at best.

You guys are making changes and creating new content that looks pretty cool, but I can't participate or get excited because I'm just frustrated by ambiguous and confusing descriptions and instructions.

 

No Kris, I'm not talking about just quotes. I thought I was perfectly clear about that.

I'm talking about bad English. I'm talking about run-on sentences. I'm talking about word combinations that create gibberish. Incorrect pluralization. Misspellings. Overuse of the colon. Missing line breaks. Using incorrect Entropian terminology.


Here, I've collected some examples for you:


"Players how have chosen to register Proving Ground Coat of Arms have their 1st reward unlocked: the Proving Grounds PvP Daily Kill MIssion."

This doesn't make sense. I have no idea what this sentence means. Maybe you are trying to say that players WHO have chosen to register..." but even then I'm still confused.


"Improved B.E. Shin Guards (Male) now correctly make Shin Guards and not Leg Guards."

Here I think I know what you are trying to say, but I have to guess that you're talking about crafting and a blueprint.


"The VU that marks the end of the Cyrene soft launch, will mean we the colonists that have evolved this planet, will see us enter a new age, hundreds maybe even thousands of years later of evolution we have created, where we will see the coming of age of Planet Cyrene and will notice that the races we met in the previous age , will be alot more advanced the dusters will have a new turrelion metropolis, Janus will come alive (not like the current Janus as looking like an Ancient Greek ghost town), those little drill bots (hmm think evolution haha)."

If you don't know what's wrong with this one, I can't help you...


My English skills are excellent, and I'm having a difficult time understanding your communications. That should concern you. You have a real issue here.

 

I agree 100% with Rei on this...the client loader is very confusing...I should not have to play a guessing game to figure out your communications....I would hope a correction to the client loader will be coming soon...THX

p.s. hope you understood my post and that it wasnt unreadable to you, if so just ask me and ill try as good as i can to explain it to you, if needed i can take this to my old englishteacher, even if she for sure have lower englishskills than you..

(IMO) the OP wasn't rude or disrespectful at all, but rather expressed his legitimate frustration with being unable to make sense of what it was that was being presented. I would have to agree with him, especially about the 2nd quoted "run-on" sentence that was quite lengthy.

When communicating information to players, it's important not to dismiss the details with regard to what you're specifically trying to convey, and make sure that things relate in an understandable way. YOU know what you mean, but it's highly likely that there may be others that don't, so short-cutting the process isn't advisable.

I know that best efforts are put forth, but with any product, the result is what builds your reputation when it comes to quality. Even if there is a very small element of less than quality results in some area, it has an effect. My suggestion would be to have more proofing and editing in place, especially with item and mission descriptions. I can understand the challenges with the Client Loader, but there too it needs to be clear.

All game-related forums (except where noted) deliver messages to the players in English, and English is required (in most cases, and even stated so in the rules) when posting and making contributions. The developers also deliver their products in English unless there is an element of the environment that very specifically requires a different world language, or storyline-created language.

Some may not think it's such a big deal, but to others, it's the difference between being inspired and motivated to become involved, or second-guessing/speculating what you might experience further. Words are very powerful, and interpretation of what you read has an effect on your decision making.

At the end of the day, the writer needs to make sure that his or her readers will be able to connect the dots without having to solve a mystery, unless of course that's part of an adventure.

I'm looking forward to the hardcore launch ... it's been in incubation far too long.

 

The examples I used were weak evidence to make my case.

However, I could have found much better (worser?) examples to use.

I didn't want to spend too much time posting here, as I was anxious to get back in game. I enjoy hunting big game and completing missions on planet Cyrene. It's fun.
